Obaseki Approves Gratuity Payments for 2011 Retired Local Government Pensioners
The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has taken a decisive step to support former local government employees by approving the payment of gratuities for those who concluded their service in 2011. This announcement comes as part of the ongoing efforts to ensure that pensioners receive the compensation entitled to them for their years of dedicated service.
Hon. Monday E. O. Osaigbovo, Commissioner for Ministry of Local Government, Community & Chieftaincy Affairs, announced that Governor Obaseki has instructed the State Pension Bureau to initiate the screening and payment process for the affected pensioners.
This latest approval follows a prior initiative in August 2024, when Governor Obaseki had similarly greenlit gratuity payments for individuals who retired in 2010, showcasing a pattern of progressive measures aimed at rectifying historical inadequacies in pension disbursement.
In his statement, Osaigbovo emphasized the transparency of the process, noting, “This is to inform the general public, especially Local Government Pensioners, that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Edo State, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki has approved the payment of gratuity to pensioners who retired in 2011.” With this assurance, the government aims to restore confidence among pensioners who have been anxiously awaiting the fulfillment of their pension rights.
To further clarify the implementation of the directive, Osaigbovo remarked, “By this directive, the Pension Bureau and 2011 retired Local Government Pensioners should take note.” This serves as a reminder for all concerned parties to remain vigilant and informed as the process unfolds, ensuring that those eligible are adequately prepared for the disbursement.
The approval for gratuity payments comes at a critical time, as there has been growing pressure and advocacy from various stakeholders urging the government to address pension-related concerns. By addressing these financial obligations, the Edo State government demonstrates not only its commitment to its retirees but also its dedication to fostering a more sustainable pension system.
It’s worth noting that Governor Obaseki has been recognized for his efforts in pension reform. He was awarded the “Most Pensioners-Friendly Governor in Nigeria” by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) in August 2023.
