Edo Deputy Governor Pledges Support for Grassroots Sports Development

Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, has affirmed the state government’s commitment to bolstering grassroots sports development under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo. Idahosa made the pledge during a reception for Super Eagles and Fenerbahçe FC defender, Bright Osayi-Samuel, who was in Edo State for the final of his annual U-13 football tournament.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Friday Aghedo, quoted Idahosa as emphasizing the strategic importance of sports as a tool for youth empowerment, employment generation, and fostering social inclusion. He stated that the state government is dedicated to revitalizing sports programs throughout Edo’s 18 local government areas.

“This administration views sports not merely as a competitive activity, but as a viable economic sector with the potential to elevate families out of poverty. Our investment in sports development is aimed at curbing youth restiveness, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening community bonds.” Idahosa said.

Idahosa lauded Osayi-Samuel for his dedication to grassroots football, assuring him of the state’s support for his U-13 tournament, which he hailed as an effective model for identifying and cultivating young talent.

Osayi-Samuel, in his remarks, advocated for increased investment in grassroots football across Nigeria, highlighting the country’s vast reservoir of untapped talent awaiting the right opportunities.

“Many talented young players lack the necessary opportunities and exposure. These young boys deserve to be seen, and my tournament serves as a platform to provide that visibility.” he stated.

He reiterated his commitment to expanding his grassroots football initiative and urged sports stakeholders to collaborate with him in giving back to the community.
