The family of Mr. Albert Afeso Akanbi, pioneer Editor of the Akoko Edo Newspaper, has announced the passing of his mother, Mrs. Funmilayo Fidelia Akanbi, who died on March 10, 2026, in a London hospital, United Kingdom. She was 76.
Born in Ososo, a picturesque town set amid streams, rocks, and rolling hills in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, Mrs. Akanbi was the daughter of Aji and Arogundade-Bello. She began her early education at Okunugbe Primary School, Ososo, where she first discovered her enduring passion for sewing.
Driven by diligence and a deep sense of purpose, she went on to build a remarkable career as a seamstress, becoming one of the most respected figures in her craft across Akoko-Edo. Operating from Igarra, the local government headquarters, Mrs. Akanbi’s career spanned nearly five decades. During this time, she trained and mentored numerous young women through apprenticeship, many of whom went on to establish successful livelihoods of their own.
Her life and work were anchored on a guiding principle of fairness and empathy—treating others as she would wish to be treated. This ethos earned her widespread admiration for her integrity, generosity, and professional excellence.
Mrs. Akanbi was married to the late Mr. Gabriel Ekundayo Akanbi, a dedicated schoolteacher. Their union was blessed with eight children.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and an extended family, all of whom remember her as a woman of resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to family and community.
Her passing marks the end of a life defined by service, sacrifice, and enduring impact.
The remains of Matriarch Funmilayo Fidelia Akanbi will be laid to rest on Wednesday April 15 at the Edgar Newman Chapel, Warren Hill Crematorium and Cemetery in London.
