The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has urged citizens and leaders alike to stay alert, united, and actively involved in protecting the country’s hard-won democratic values as Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day.
In a strongly worded message released on June 12, Governor Okpebholo described the annual commemoration not merely as a historical remembrance, but as a renewed call to action for all Nigerians to confront contemporary challenges threatening the nation’s stability and progress.
The governor paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, particularly the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other pro-democracy activists who fought tirelessly for the restoration of democratic rule. He noted that their sacrifices paved the way for Nigerians to freely elect their leaders, but warned that sustaining democracy requires constant effort from both the government and the people.
“Democracy is not a final destination but an ongoing journey,” Governor Okpebholo stated. “The responsibility to guard and improve our democratic institutions lies with every one of us.”
The governor identified insecurity as one of the most pressing threats to Nigeria’s development. He highlighted the persistent cases of kidnapping, cult-related violence, armed robbery, and other criminal activities that continue to claim lives and destroy livelihoods across different parts of the country.
He stressed that true democracy cannot flourish in an environment where citizens live in constant fear.
“Democracy means very little to a family that cannot sleep peacefully at night or to communities living under the shadow of criminals,” he said. “Security, justice, and the protection of lives and property remain the most important dividends of democracy.”
Governor Okpebholo assured residents of Edo State that his administration has ramped up efforts to tackle insecurity through closer collaboration with security agencies, improved intelligence gathering at the community level, and decisive operations against kidnapping, cultism, and other violent crimes.
He also highlighted key programmes under his **SHINE Agenda**, which include expanding access to quality healthcare via the Edo Health Insurance Scheme (EdoHIS), rehabilitating vital infrastructure, strengthening the education sector, empowering youths with skills and opportunities, and driving economic initiatives aimed at improving living standards across the state.
Despite the current difficulties, the governor expressed strong optimism about Nigeria’s future. He reminded citizens that the country has successfully navigated tough periods in the past through collective resilience, unity, and determination.
“Nigeria has overcome difficult times before, and we will surely overcome the present challenges,” he affirmed. “With strong institutions, responsible leadership, active citizen participation, and faith in our collective potential, we can build a safer, more prosperous, and more united nation.”
Governor Okpebholo also called on political leaders, public officials, and ordinary citizens to uphold the values of accountability, transparency, and respect for the rule of law. He cautioned against divisive politics, the spread of misinformation, and any actions that could weaken democratic structures.
As the country looks ahead to future elections, the governor encouraged peaceful political engagement, issue-based campaigns, and responsible participation by all citizens.
“Democracy thrives through active participation, integrity, and respect for institutions. Let us work together to create a Nigeria where justice, opportunities, and hope are available to every citizen,” he concluded.
