The Edo State Government has rolled out its 2026 Annual Operational Plan (AOP) for the health sector, with the aim of enhancing programme implementation, strengthening coordination among stakeholders, and ensuring more effective use of available resources to deliver quality healthcare services to residents.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, made this known on Tuesday in Benin during the official dissemination meeting of the 2026 AOP, organised by the ministry in collaboration with the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN).
Dr. Oshiomhole described the AOP as a comprehensive strategic document designed to guide planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of all health programmes and interventions in the state. Although the plan is already midway through its implementation cycle, soft copies had previously been shared with relevant stakeholders for their input and review.
He explained that the meeting was convened to formally present the validated document, clearly define the roles and responsibilities of various partners, and renew collective commitment towards achieving the plan’s objectives.
The commissioner commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his visionary leadership and unwavering support for the health sector. He also appreciated the contributions of development partners, including IHVN, the World Health Organization (WHO), USAID, ICI, and GHSG-PSM, as well as programme officers and heads of departments who worked tirelessly on the document.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Andrew Iyamu, described the AOP as more than just a planning tool. He said it reflects the state government’s serious commitment to transforming healthcare delivery and ensuring better health outcomes for the people of Edo.
Iyamu assured stakeholders of the governor’s continued support and pledged that the administration would provide the necessary backing for the successful execution of the plan.
The Director of Planning, Research and Statistics in the ministry, Mrs. Loretta Iruobe, noted that the engagement was designed to ensure all stakeholders fully understand the objectives, targets, and their individual responsibilities in the successful implementation of the 2026 AOP.
She emphasised the critical role of data-driven planning, strong partnerships, and continuous monitoring in achieving the health sector’s goals.
Other participants at the meeting stressed the importance of sustained collaboration, accountability, and dedication from all actors involved in the health sector to improve access to quality services across the state.
The highlight of the event was the official unveiling of the 2026 Edo State Health Sector Annual Operational Plan, which is expected to serve as a key roadmap for driving impactful health interventions and tracking measurable progress throughout the year.
