Edo PDP Slams ‘Illegal’ Local Government By-Elections as Assault on Democracy

The Edo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has fiercely denounced the planned by-elections for local government councils, labeling the move as both illegal and a direct violation of constitutional principles.

In a statement released on Monday in Benin City by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Chris Nehikhare, the PDP criticized the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission for announcing dates for the by-elections, alleging that the action disregards an existing court order. Nehikhare argued that the organizers lack legal authority to conduct such elections, describing them as an unrecognized entity acting outside the law.

The PDP emphasized that no vacancies exist in the state’s 192 wards, as elected councillors are currently serving with their terms legally set to end in September 2026. The party accused the state government of orchestrating a “civilian coup” aimed at undermining the people’s will and destabilizing grassroots governance.

“This blatant disregard for democratic norms and judicial rulings is an attempt to seize control of our councils by force, eroding the foundation of local governance,” Nehikhare stated.

The PDP urged the state government to abandon the planned by-elections, respect the rule of law, and avoid plunging Edo State into an unnecessary political crisis. The party reiterated its commitment to safeguarding democracy and protecting the mandate of the people.
