The Edo State Police Command has issued a stern warning to residents against the sale and use of fireworks during the yuletide, stressing that such activities remain prohibited under existing laws.
In a statement released on Sunday in Benin City, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, described popular fireworks such as “bangers” and “knockouts” as illegal and disruptive to public peace. He noted that the command had observed a troubling rise in their use across the state, raising serious security concerns at a time when law enforcement agencies are on heightened alert.
According to Yamu, the loud and sudden explosions from fireworks are capable of creating unnecessary panic, instilling fear among residents, and potentially triggering false security alerts or avoidable emergencies. He emphasized that fireworks constitute a nuisance and are outlawed under relevant statutes.
“The use of fireworks is prohibited under the law. Anyone found selling, purchasing, or using bangers will be arrested and prosecuted,” Yamu declared.
The police spokesman warned traders against stocking fireworks and urged parents and guardians to caution their children against using them. He assured that the command would intensify surveillance across communities to ensure full compliance.
Yamu further encouraged members of the public to report individuals engaging in the sale or use of fireworks, adding that the police control room remains accessible via dedicated hotlines for emergencies and information.
Reassuring residents, Yamu stated that the command is fully prepared to maintain order and protect lives and property throughout the festive season and beyond. He explained that the enforcement measures form part of broader efforts to sustain peace and prevent security breaches during the holiday period.
