The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has expressed serious concern over the escalating cases of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) across the state.
During a press conference held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, in Benin City, Commissioner Agbonika highlighted the disturbing trend and the police command’s commitment to addressing it.
According to Commissioner Agbonika, the Edo State Police Command has apprehended over 23 suspects in the past two months for their alleged involvement in rape, defilement, and other SGBV-related offenses. This significant number underscores the severity of the problem within the state.
“This trend is painful, unacceptable, and deeply concerning,” stated Commissioner Agbonika. “Violence is never a solution to any disagreement or desire. Rather, it destroys lives, families, and communities.”
The Commissioner assured the public that the police command is dedicated to relentlessly pursuing offenders and ensuring that survivors receive the justice they deserve. He emphasized the command’s commitment to thoroughly investigating all reported cases of SGBV and bringing perpetrators to justice.
The Edo State Police Command urges residents to report any incidents of SGBV to the authorities immediately. The command reaffirms its dedication to protecting the vulnerable and creating a safer environment for all citizens of Edo State.
