The Edo State Police Command has announced the deployment of 6,000 security personnel across the state as part of intensified efforts to maintain peace and public safety during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Monday Agbonika, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday in Benin City by the command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem.
According to the police commissioner, the large-scale deployment is aimed at ensuring residents celebrate the Islamic festival in a peaceful and secure atmosphere without fear of criminal activities or security threats.
Agbonika explained that the operation is being carried out in collaboration with other security agencies operating within the state to strengthen surveillance, intelligence gathering, visibility policing, and patrol activities before, during, and after the festivities.
He noted that personnel from various tactical formations of the police force have already been strategically stationed across key locations in Edo State to guarantee rapid response and effective security coverage.
The commissioner said officers from the Police Mobile Force, State Intelligence Department, tactical units, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit were among those deployed for the operation.
According to him, security personnel will be stationed at Eid prayer grounds, highways, markets, recreational centres, motor parks, and other public spaces expected to witness increased movement and large gatherings during the celebration period.
Agbonika warned individuals planning to engage in criminal activities to stay away from the state, stressing that law enforcement officers have been fully mobilised and prepared to respond decisively to any attempt to disrupt public peace.
“The command remains committed to ensuring that residents and visitors enjoy a safe and hitch-free celebration throughout the state,” he stated.
He also congratulated Muslim faithful on the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir and encouraged residents to remain security conscious, vigilant, and law-abiding during the festivities.
The police boss further appealed to members of the public to support security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious persons, movements, or activities to the nearest police station or relevant authorities.
Reaffirming the command’s dedication to protecting lives and property, Agbonika assured residents that security operatives would continue to maintain peace and order across Edo State even after the celebrations.
