The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced the installation of 200 solar-powered street lights at Auchi Polytechnic as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen security and improve the learning environment within the institution.
Mr. Mathias Ikpefua, Director of Community and Rural Development at the NDDC, made the disclosure on Monday while leading a team of the commission’s delegates on a courtesy visit to the polytechnic’s management.
According to Ikpefua, the solar street light project is aimed at enhancing security, improving nighttime visibility across the campus, and creating a safer and more conducive atmosphere for both learning and work. He revealed that the intervention forms part of a broader NDDC initiative involving the installation of 245 solar-powered street lights in total.
“This project is part of a larger NDDC intervention involving the installation of 245 solar-powered street lights. With 200 units designated for Auchi Polytechnic and the remaining 45 units for the Igbei community, the project is expected to enhance nighttime visibility and improve security within the polytechnic environment upon completion,” he stated.
Ikpefua encouraged the management of the institution to maintain close collaboration with the commission in order to attract more developmental projects and infrastructure to the polytechnic.
Speaking on behalf of the contracting firm, Tosamila Global Resources Ltd., Mr. Jonathan Ibrahim confirmed that 200 solar lights would be installed within the polytechnic premises while 45 units would be placed around the surrounding community. He assured that installation work would begin immediately to ensure timely completion for the benefit of staff, students, and other members of the polytechnic community.
Responding on behalf of the institution’s management, Dr. Edith Oyati, Deputy Rector (Administration), expressed appreciation to the NDDC for the intervention. She described the project as a significant contribution to the development of the polytechnic and urged the contractor to execute the work in strict accordance with approved specifications and within the agreed timeframe.
The solar street light project is expected to significantly improve safety and visibility on campus, particularly during night hours, thereby supporting a more secure and productive academic environment at Auchi Polytechnic.
