His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin, has appealed to Rotary International for a collaborative partnership aimed at securing the return of over 3,000 Benin artifacts that were looted during the British expedition of 1897.
The Oba made this appeal during a meeting with Rotary International CEO and Secretary-General, John Hewko, and his delegation at the Royal Palace in Benin City on Thursday.
The artifacts, which hold immense cultural and historical significance for the Benin people, are currently scattered across the globe, residing in private collections and within the holdings of various museums. The Oba emphasized the critical role that Rotarians, with their extensive global network, could play in advocating for the artifacts’ return.
“Many of our artifacts are in the hands of private collectors in America,” the Oba stated, drawing upon his personal knowledge. “Members of the Rotary Club are all over the place. I would like you to join forces to engage your European counterparts.”
He urged Rotarians to use their influence to inform their colleagues about the Benin Royal Court’s efforts to recover approximately 3,000 dispersed artifacts.
John Hewko, in response, lauded the Oba’s dedication to fostering peace and mediating disputes both within Edo State and beyond. He conveyed greetings from Rotary International and its 1.2 million members worldwide.
“Your Royal Majesty, it is a great pleasure to be here in your kingdom… The concept of peace is extraordinarily important for us,” Hewko stated. He commended the Oba for his ongoing efforts to promote peace and unity, especially in a world facing numerous divisions and challenges.
The potential collaboration between the Benin Royal Court and Rotary International represents a significant step forward in the ongoing effort to repatriate Benin’s cultural heritage. By leveraging the global reach and influence of Rotary International, the Oba hopes to increase awareness and garner support for the return of these invaluable artifacts to their rightful home.
