Concerned residents of Okpella community in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State have urgently appealed to the Federal Government, the Inspector-General of Police, and other relevant security agencies to launch a comprehensive and impartial investigation into a series of violent incidents that led to deaths and injuries in the area.
The residents voiced their demands during a news conference held in Abuja on Tuesday, highlighting what they described as escalating security challenges stemming from disagreements over traditional leadership and other local issues.
One of the speakers, Mr. Shamsudeen Aliyu, recounted a distressing event on October 6, 2024, during which he sustained serious injuries. He alleged that one of his companions lost his life in the same incident, forcing him to seek medical attention and eventually relocate from the community out of safety concerns.
Another resident, Mr. Dennis Kingsley, pointed to underlying tensions in the community linked to traditional rulership disputes. He specifically referenced injuries sustained by several people during the annual Olimi Festival in May and called for a detailed probe into the circumstances that triggered the violence.
Mr. Daniel Aliyu, whose brother Dickson Aliu reportedly passed away on May 16, also urged authorities to thoroughly examine the events surrounding his sibling’s death to ensure justice is served.
The speakers collectively appealed for swift and unbiased action from security agencies, emphasizing the need to restore peace and prevent further bloodshed in the community.
In response to the growing concerns, the Palace of the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella issued a statement reaffirming its dedication to maintaining peace and harmony. The palace, through its Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Gabriel Emameh, clarified that the tragic incident occurred after the conclusion of activities marking the first phase of the Olimi Festival.
According to the palace, one individual — identified as Dickson Aliu — lost his life, while several others sustained injuries. It noted that security agencies had been proactively invited to provide security cover during the festival, and strict measures were implemented to prevent the carrying of dangerous weapons.
The traditional ruler expressed condolences to the bereaved family and appealed to all residents to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and allow security agencies to conduct a proper investigation.
As of the latest reports, security agencies are yet to release an official statement regarding the incidents.
The situation in Okpella has drawn attention to the delicate balance between cultural celebrations and community safety in parts of Edo State. Local stakeholders hope that a transparent investigation will help address the root causes of the conflict and promote lasting reconciliation.
