The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a disturbing surge in road fatalities in Edo State, with 33 lives lost in traffic accidents between January and February. The stark figures highlight the urgent need for improved road safety measures and increased driver vigilance.
Cyril Matthew, the Edo Sector Commander of the FRSC, revealed the alarming statistics to newsmen in Benin City on Tuesday. He detailed the breakdown, stating that January saw 15 deaths recorded from 17 crashes involving a total of 119 individuals.
“In February, 171 passengers were involved in 18 accidents, resulting in 18 deaths and 69 injuries,” Matthew explained. This points to a consistent pattern of accidents across the two-month period, causing significant loss of life and physical harm.
The FRSC Sector Commander attributed the primary causes of these accidents to a range of preventable factors. These include: brake failure, excessive speeding, instances of dangerous driving, the use of mobile phones while operating vehicles, and violations of designated traffic routes.
Addressing motorists directly, Matthew urged a more responsible approach to driving. “Avoid overloading, drunk driving, night driving and speeding to ensure road safety,” he cautioned, emphasizing the direct link between these behaviors and the devastating consequences observed on Edo State roads.
In response to the alarming statistics, the FRSC is intensifying its road safety campaigns across the state. This proactive measure aims to raise awareness among drivers and the general public about the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and practicing safe driving habits.
Furthermore, Matthew issued a call to action, urging collaboration among all stakeholders to work towards the ultimate goal of achieving zero road crashes in Edo State.
He emphasized that a collective effort, involving government agencies, transport unions, and the general public, is essential to creating a safer road environment for everyone. The FRSC hopes that heightened awareness and collaborative efforts will significantly reduce the number of accidents and fatalities in the coming months.
