The Edo State Security Squad (ESSS) has given businesses operating in the state until July 30 to install functional Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems on their premises or risk facing sanctions. This directive forms part of a broader strategy to combat rising insecurity and improve crime investigation capabilities.
According to the squad’s spokesperson, Mr. Noah Idemudia, the move is aimed at assisting security agencies in gathering vital evidence that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. Speaking with journalists in Benin on Monday, Idemudia emphasised that CCTV footage plays a crucial role in reconstructing crime scenes, identifying perpetrators, and supporting successful prosecutions.
“Business owners are encouraged to install effective, working cameras within their business areas. We appeal to the general public and the business community to comply for everyone’s safety,” he stated.
Idemudia explained that with proper CCTV coverage, security operatives can more effectively piece together incidents of security breaches. He urged full compliance, describing it as a collective effort to make Edo State safer for residents and visitors alike.
This directive aligns with the state government’s zero-tolerance approach to criminal activities under Governor Monday Okpebholo. The installation of surveillance cameras is expected to serve as both a deterrent to criminals and a valuable tool for rapid response and evidence collection.
In addition to the CCTV mandate, the ESSS issued a strong warning against planned cult-related activities associated with the July 7/7 celebrations. Idemudia cautioned that anyone caught participating in such rites would be arrested and prosecuted, regardless of location.
He also reiterated the importance of community involvement in security, calling for the profiling of genuine community leaders in collaboration with the Palace of the Oba of Benin. Impostors parading as leaders were warned to desist or face consequences.
Recently, the squad arrested two suspects from Auchi and Uromi for cultism and illegal possession of firearms. They will be arraigned before the mobile court established by the governor to fast-track the trial of cultists and kidnappers.
The Edo State Security Squad’s push for widespread CCTV installation reflects a proactive, technology-driven approach to tackling insecurity. Business owners are advised to comply promptly to avoid penalties while contributing to the collective goal of a safer Edo State.
