The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) on Monday officially presented Certificates of Return to the chairmen and vice chairmen who emerged victorious in Saturday’s local government elections across the state’s 18 local government areas.
The presentation ceremony took place at the commission’s headquarters in Benin, marking the formal conclusion of the 2026 local government electoral process.
While presenting the certificates, EDSIEC Chairman Mr. Jonathan Aifuobhokhan congratulated all candidates who participated in the polls, with special commendation for those declared winners. He charged them to uphold the highest standards of honesty, fairness, and accountability in office.
“The Certificate of Return is more than an official document. It is a mandate given to you by the people of your respective local government areas,” Aifuobhokhan reminded the elected officials. “Public office is a sacred trust. Lead with integrity, humility and fairness, and always work for the good of the people.”
He urged the new chairmen and vice chairmen to prioritise peace and unity, promote inclusive governance that transcends political, religious, and ethnic lines, and manage public resources responsibly for the benefit of residents at the grassroots.
The EDSIEC chairman also expressed appreciation to the Edo State Government, security agencies, political parties, election observers, civil society organisations, traditional and religious leaders, the media, election officials, and the general public for their contributions to the peaceful and successful conduct of the polls.
Responding on behalf of the elected chairmen, the Chairman-elect of Oredo Local Government Area commended the commission for organising what he described as a free, fair, and credible election. He assured residents that the new council leaders would align with the state government’s development agenda and work diligently to deliver tangible dividends of democracy at the local level.
