60% of Students’ Time Will Lead to Academic Success –Edo commissioner

Dr. Joan Oviawe, the Commissioner for Education in Edo State, suggests that allocating 60% of students’ time to teaching, learning, and instructional activities would lead to significant academic improvement.

Additionally, Oviawe proposes that 24% of students’ time should be dedicated to co-curricular activities, while 16% should be focused on brain-stimulating endeavors.

“We have redesigned our academic activities to help students stay relevant and meet the changing demands of the workplace.

“Our new approach allocates 60% of the time for teaching, learning, and instruction; 24% for activities that complement the curriculum; and 16% for activities that challenge the students’ brains. This way, we address all three aspects of learning (Psychomotor, Affective and Cognitive) and ensure that students have at least 400 hours/450 class periods of learning each term.” she said.

This recommendation comes in response to concerns about the declining quality of education in Edo State, evident from the increasing rate of malpractice and misconduct during major examinations.

To address these challenges, Dr. Oviawe emphasizes the approval of a uniform timetable that ensures lectures can be conducted almost anywhere. This not only minimizes scheduling conflicts among instructors but also optimizes the use of limited teaching staff and resources.
